Marie F Turso

Marie Frances Turso passed away Tuesday, November 22, at The Moorings in Lewes, DE. She was 95 years old. Born Marie Frances Grunthaler on October 7, 1927, in Weehawken, NJ. Raised in Ridgefield, she grew up surrounded by her parents, aunts, and cousins. She raised her own family in the same neighborhood and resided there until 2017. Marie married Joseph Turso of Jersey City, NJ, in 1950. Together they raised two children – Gail Marie Lippmann and Paul Joseph Turso. 

Fiercely independent, brave, big hearted, stubborn, and larger than life, she presided over and cared for her extended family for sixty years. Family trips with the kids and aunts to upstate New York and the Jersey shore, countless holidays, and summer afternoons with her grandkids. Her manicotti was a thing of legend, her pumpkin pie the cornerstone of the holiday season. In later years, she would venture down to Atlantic City on a whim, leaving her family wondering where she had gone.  

Each summer, for 50 years, she spent two weeks at the Jersey Shore. That house became our family compound, a place for those she loved and who loved her to gather. Her generosity and vigor permeated the walls of that small bungalow. Wild blueberry picking, afternoons in the lagoon, early morning donut runs on the way to Island Beach State Park, and evenings playing rummy cube on the porch. A special time away, just for the family to be together. The cornerstone of the family’s collective memory. 

Marie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, and brother George. She is survived by her two children, two grandchildren (Brad and Keith) and five great-grandchildren (Abigail, Samantha, Edward, Georgina, and Katherine).

Friends and family are welcome to attend a viewing on Tuesday, November 29, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm, at Blackley Funeral Home in Ridgefield, NJ. A private burial will follow on Wednesday, November 30.
