Joan Mary, 77, of Park Ridge, NJ, passed away on April 25, 2014 at the Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River, NJ after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 24, 1937 in Waldwick, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Mary and Paul Hein. Joan was an avid walker and spent many hours with friends at Wooddale Park in Woodcliff Lake. She enjoyed watching sports, especially football. Above all she loved spending time and taking care of her family. Joan was an executive secretary at Federal Paperboard for 23 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert P. Kern Jr. in 2009. She is survived by her brothers Kenneth Hein, Buffalo N.Y. and Donald Hein, Lewes, Delaware. Joan is also survived by her loving children Robert and his wife Karen, Drums , PA; Mark, Park Ridge NJ; Joan, Park Ridge NJ; William and his life long partner Kathleen, Park Ridge, NJ and 4 grandchildren Christopher, Robert, Rob, and Steven. Joan was an inspiration to everyone she touched and will be greatly missed by all. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 46 Pascack Road, Park Ridge, NJ on May 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Villa Marie Claire 12 West Saddle River Road, Saddle River NJ. Blackley Funeral Home, Ridgefield, NJ was entrusted with her arrangements.
